Campsites at Anastasia SP in Florida

I am looking to reserve a site at Anastasia SP for next summer for our 1st visit there ever. I noticed there are 3 different camping loops and wanted your opinion on where to stay. Our TT is 27 feet long; I prefer sites that are shaded and private. Is one area better than another or all they all pretty much the same? Thanks.

RE: Has anyone camped at Hilton Head Island?

JCWWBT: I think someone would notice if we hooked on to you;) but thanks for the offer. We had seafood at The Crab Shack in Tybee Island and shrimp and grits at Lady and Sons in Savannah. We were able to catch the fireworks right from the campground.

RE: What hooked you on camping...and your fondest memory?

My DH dragged me kicking and screaming to a weekend at Peace River in Acadia, FL. All our gear (tents, sleeping bags, etc.) was borrowed and you had to fit everything on your canoe and paddle for 21 miles to get back to your car. Did I mention we went for Labor Day and were in Central Florida and we saw snakes and alligators and had to do all our business in the woods and that it was VERY HOT? I don't know what happened to me that weekend but I fell in love with the idea of spending and entire weekend outdoors. I'm a CPA and spend my workdays in central A.C. and under flourescent light so maybe being away from all the electronics really appealed to me. Along came the little ones and we stopped camping. One day, while vacationing in a beach house in Bonita Beach, we had horrible weather and, bored, went for a drive to a local RV dealer b/c my cousin wanted to buy a PUP. My cousin never bought the PUP but on a whim we bought one later that week. 4 years later we have never looked back and are grateful for the wonderful experiences our camping has brought to us and our 2 children.

RE: Has anyone camped at Hilton Head Island?

We just arrived yesterday from a great week at Hilton Head and stayed at Hilton Head Harbor RV Resort and Marina. The place was beautiful and very well maintained. It is far from the beaches but traffic was not too bad and parking was plentiful despite being the week of the 4th of July. Park staff was very friendly, especially Ed. My only complaint is that we lugged our 4 bikes in our TT only to find that the bike trails were too far from the campground. I would have rather stayed at the other park which is closer to the bike trails, shops, and beaches but they don't allow us lowly TT's.:R

RE: Must Do's in Hilton Head and Savannah

Creeper, it sounds like you don't think 1 day in Savannah is enough. We are open to going back 2 days if we need be. We were planning on going to Tybee Island on a different day since it's only an hour from HH.

Must Do's in Hilton Head and Savannah

We will be heading to Hilton Head next Friday for 1 week and wanted your opinion on things we "must do" during our stay. We will be taking a day trip to Savannah as well so if you have any suggestions on that please include them.

RE: Curry Hammock - here I come!

You will love it! We were there late April on site 19 (on the ocean) and were thrilled. The sites are large, clean, and full of gravel, not dirt. We had to deal with the tail end of the beach renovation project but hopefully they will be done by the time you go. They dumped 27 million pounds of sand on the beach to give the turtles a better nesting habitat. Note that the beach is more of a wading beach as it is very shallow and not great for swimming.

RE: Higher gas price, less travel?

I will not be changing any of our plans this summer, although it does bother me to spend so much on fuel. We are a family of 4, me, DH, DD, and DS. They will only be young once and camping is our family's passion. 20 years from now I doubt I'll remember what I paid for gas on the 8 or so trips we're taking this summer (Miami to Hilton Head being the longest one, another to Orlando, and the rest weekend trips to the Keys). What I will remember is our wonderful road trips and the fun summer we gave our kids. It's still cheaper than flying and staying in a hotel and spending a fortune on restaurants and the incremental cost is minimal. Think about it, if last summer would have cost me $500 in gas to go to HH and gas is up 30% then I'm paying and extra $150 - not enough to make me stay home.

RE: Who is camping over Memorial Day?

We'll be at Bahia Honda SP in the beautiful Florida Keys. Will be playing hookie from work to make it a 4 day weekend!!:B

RE: The serenity of Camping

I think you are right on the mark. We live in a subarb of Miami and camp 15-18 a year. One of our favorite escapes is heading down to the Florida Keys. Just the drive down the Overseas Highway is enough to put us in a different frame of mind. Silly though it sounds, one of the things I live for is to see that beautiful blue ocean during the day and at night, to look up into the night sky and see thousands of stars. We can't see too many stars in the city. My children have likewise gained an appreciation of the starry nights - something I doubt they's appreciate were it not for camping. Many of our trips are short weekends, leave Friday/return Sunday. My coworkers often ask me "is it worth the hassle for just a weekend?" Well, on of our last trips last mongh we slept overlooking the Atlantic Ocean breathing in the fresh ocean air. We'd had a nice cool front and we unzipped all the bunk screens on our hybrid - that is what I call peace.

RE: Problems carrying bikes

Sorry to hear about your troubles. We came to the same conclusion, that having the bikes inside works best. We also had a Thule that was attached to the TT bumper but had problems with it. The rubber straps that came with it did not hold up well. In addition, the handle bars rubbed up against the back and made a 2 inch hole in the fiberglass. We have total peace of mind having the bikes inside the HTT (see my signature for make/model).

RE: Simple and easy foods

We love to grill steak kabobs. The marinade I like is a bit time consuming so I prepare it at home and keep it in gallon size ziplock. Ingredients are basically minced garlic, chopped fresh parsely, equal parts olive oil and lemon juice and a dash of crushed red pepper. Salt the meat right before you throw it on the grill. Add sirloin steak cut into cubes and marinade from either the night before or the morning of. We add mushrooms, onions, and grape tomatoes and grill those on separate skewers.

RE: Lion Country Safari KOA -Florida

We have been with our kids who were 5 and 7 at the time. It's a neat experience to do once. The campground is your typical KOA - one camper on top of another but it's adjacent to Lion Country Safari and you can listen to the lions roaring in the morning from your camper. They do not allow campfires b/c the smoke from the fire scares the animals. We did not realize this and they were quite nasty in telling us to put our our fire!

RE: Bahia Honda Campground

We have stayed at both sites. Both are very large. Site 12 is "sort of" on the water. It backs into a small dock that is known as the camper's marina (for small boats only). Site 13 has a better view and has a bbq grill overlooking water and the Old Bahia Honda Bridge. Richie O, we'll be there that weekend on site #19!

RE: help with choosing hybrid

We are on our 3rd HTT. 1st was a Starcraft Antigua 19CK. We are a family of 4 and thought it too small for our needs so we traded up. Also, I didn't like the white cabinetry. Although it was beautiful, I spent much time cleaning scuff marks. For some reason the quality on that trailer was not good - the drawers would brake constantly. That brings me to our 2nd HTT - Starcraft Travelstar 21SSO. Much better quality and great storage. 11 months into it we totalled it in an accident (along with our new Expedition) but by the grace of the Lord above came away unharmed. Our current HTT is an Aerolite Cub 23TT. You can't beat the floorplan. It has 3 bunks, more storage than I know what to do with, and a very open floorplan - plenty of room for all of us and any tag-alongs. Another great thing is the bunk system. Our Starcraft had removable poles that were bulky and a pain to put up. The Cub works on cables that close with the bunk end so there are no poles to deal with - much easier. I will tell you that the overall quality is not great - our cabinet doors have been replaced and we had problems with the bunks leaking. We bought from a very reputable dealer so all was repaired free of charge and have had no problems since.

RE: Bahia Honda site length

We camp at Bahia Honda 10 times a year and have purposely stayed away from sites 4-12 as they are smallish. It sounds like you will be over by a lot (4 feet). Try calling the ranger and see if she/he has better info on that specific site but I do remember it being small.

RE: Need Help for summer plans

Try Moonshine Creek in Balsam. If you can believe this, my only complaint was that there was toooooo much shade (we had some rainy days and none of our stuff would dry). It is a beautiful park, many sites back into a creek. The staff was very friendly too.

RE: Suggestions for c/g near beach and warm weather,PLEASE

Try Fort De Soto in St. Petersburg, FL. It's a county park, not a state park and you can reserve thru www.pinellascounty.org It is likely booked by now but you can also try Florida's awesome state parks at www.floridastateparks.org and it will give you ideas for beach camping. There are many options, depending on where in the state you'd like to visit.

RE: Lake Louisa State Park as an alternative to Ft. WIlderness

Hi Richie O. I just reserved at Bill Frederick's at Turkey Lake in Orlando. I've never been but know someone who has and says it's great. It is a city of Orlando park and is 10 minute from Universal Studios. I've been to Lake Louisa and the lack of trees really makes it ho-hum. The lake is very beautiful though and the campground was impecable.
